A Few September 2022 Happenings
/Is it still summer or is it fall? Will it be hot outside or will there be a chill in the air? Do I want a lobster roll or a pumpkin spice latte? These are questions we ask this time of year - and I don’t have the answers. I can, however, help with the question of what to do as a family this September.
See below for my picks of what to do this month!
NEW YORK RENAISSANCE FAIRE, TUXEDO, NY
Weekends through October 9
The New York Renaissance Faire comes again to Tuxedo, NY - not far from Westchester or Fairfield Counties - to enchant guests with themed games, rides, performances and of course, jousts. Kids will love seeing all the costumed performers and attractions from days of yore. Check the Faire’s website for different themed weekends and events happening during the Faire’s run.
Tickets can be purchased in advance and used any day during the Faire’s run. Adults tickets cost $35 and children’s tickets are $18 (free for age 4 and under). Tickets include access to all entertainment and performances. Non-electric rides, carnival games and food vendors will cost extra.
QUAKER RIDGE HAWK WATCH WEEKEND, GREENWICH, CT
Sept 24 and Sept 25 from 10am to 2pm
Bring the whole family to the Greenwich Audubon to hang up close with hawks and owls during Live Raptor Presentations by falconers and local wildlife rehabilitators. Learn how to identify species of migratory hawks, eagles, falcons and vultures over our heads during Raptor Identification Workshops. The Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch Weekend is BACK (albeit in a more stripped down form this year). And as September is a period of peak raptor migration there should be many species in the sky.
Check in for the event is at the entrance of Hawk Watch Lawn. Tickets MUST be purchased in advance HERE. Tickets for a single day cost $20 per adult and $10 for kids age 12 and under. See event page for presentation schedule.
THE NORWALK OYSTER FESTIVAL, NORWALK, CT
Sept 9th from 6pm to 11pm
Sept 10th from 11am to 11pm
Sept 11th from 11am to 8pm
Now in its 44th year, the Norwalk Seaport Association’s Oyster Festival celebrates the end of summer with a weekend long tribute to - you guessed it - oysters! Besides celebrating the history of Norwalk’s oyster industry, the event features live music, art vendors, food vendors and an entire “Kids’ Cove” with performances, face painters, activities and even some carnival rides.
The event takes place in Norwalk’s Veteran’s Memorial Park. Tickets are $14 for adults and kids aged 5-12 are $6 on Friday and Saturday and FREE on Sunday.
SEPTEMBERFEST BLOCK PARTY, MT. KISCO, NY
Sept 16th at 12pm to Sept 18th at 8pm
If you haven’t yet tired of summer carnivals, the Northern Westchester town of Mt. Kisco puts on its annual carnival a bit later in the season. Septemberfest features the usual roaster of carnival rides, along with live music performances, a street fair, demonstrations and food offerings.
BARLETT ARBORETUM HONEY HARVEST FESTIVAL, STAMFORD, CT
Sept 18 from 11am to 3pm
Head over to Barlett Arboretum this month to celebrate all things HONEY! They will have tastings, a marketplace, kids crafts and activities, live music, food trucks and more. Free admission for all! It’s the THIRD annual Honey Harvest Festival!
THE FEAST OF SAN GENNARO, NEW YORK, NY
Sept 15th to Sept 25th (Differing times each day)
The Feast is an Italian celebration of the life of San Gennaro of Naples. There are Feasts this time of year all over, including closer to home in Yorktown, NY and Danbury, CT. But the biggest in the area by far is the Feast of San Gennaro in Manhattan’s Little Italy. Each September (well not during Covid), Italians of New York and those non-Italians looking for a good time, gather in Little Italy to celebrate and bask in Italian pride. There are all kinds of vendors and street foods and fanfare. And throughout the duration of Feast, there are various food eating competitions from meatballs to cannoli. It’s crowded and hectic and tons of fun.
