Counter Culture (Some Great Counter Service Spots)

Counter Culture (Some Great Counter Service Spots)

Sometimes you can’t or just don’t want to cook. And sometimes you can’t or just don’t want to spend the time and money on a long, drawn out sit down restaurant meal. In these moments, quick service spots are what you can and want to do.

We all rely on counter service spots to quickly pop into to grab ourselves or our kids or our friends or our co-workers a fast and tasty meal. We all have our favorites (my kids favorite is a place called McDonald’s). Here are a few of my favorite local fast casual spots to satisfy various cravings.

I Can't Wait To Get Sitters Again

I Can't Wait To Get Sitters Again

If you are, like me, (i) a parent who has had NO access to babysitters for the past year and/or (ii) a person who is still uncomfortable with the prospect of indoor dining, then, probably, you are, like me, REALLY missing the glorious feeling of having an adult meal inside a restaurant.

In normal times, my husband and I fairly regularly treat ourselves to a sitter in order to have some alone time together and to try some of the nicer spots around. I miss that A LOT.

Alas, spring is getting nearer. Vaccines are happening. And my SECOND COVID birthday is fast approaching. MAYBE soon things will be some version of normal again. Until then, I’m daydreaming about all my favorite local spots to revisit when I have a sitter. Here is that list in case you feel like daydreaming with me.

Think of this as the grown up version of my “Where to Feed Your Kids” list!

PS I included below only spots that I’ve been to (and been impressed with) over and over. I have a whole other mental list of spots that I’ve done just once, and badly need to try again (e.g. Don Memo in Westport, Maria in New Rochelle, the Whitlock in Katonah and L’Inizio in Ardsley).

At Least We Can Still Eat Summery Foods

At Least We Can Still Eat Summery Foods

Yup. Memorial Day weekend 2020 seems to be mostly cancelled. No jetting off to crowded beaches. No outdoor concerts. No town pools and pool clubs. This Memorial Day weekend, it’s all about day drinking at home with your kids splashing nearby in an inflatable pool that you were overcharged for on Amazon.

But at least there’s one awesome warm weather activity that’s still mostly intact for this Memorial Day weekend: Eating Summery Foods.

Here are five places, all presently open for curbside pick up, that will at least make your mouth feel like it’s celebrating the start of summer.

There Is So Much To Love About The Revamped Bedford Playhouse

There Is So Much To Love About The Revamped Bedford Playhouse

I was very slow to learn about the major revitalization of a 1947 movie theater happening just 20 minutes from my house in Bedford, NY. Back in Spring 2017, a revamp to the tune of over $8 million began to transform the former movie theater into what is today a beautiful cultural hub called the Bedford Playhouse.

Now that I’ve finally visited, I am hooked on the Bedford Playhouse. There is a lot to love about this place.

Goosefeather is Good

Goosefeather is Good

Goosefeather is a brand new, happening spot in Tarrytown, tucked far away from the rest of the retail in town, at The King Mansion in the Tarrytown House Estate. The fact that the restaurant is so hidden but already rather packed can only mean one thing - a TV famous, NYC famous chef is at the helm.

The spot has been open less than a month and the food and atmosphere is already many notches above the pack. I’ll tell you more below, but first, stop reading, book a sitter and make a reservation.

Get a Killer Sandwich at this Eastchester Must Do

Get a Killer Sandwich at this Eastchester Must Do

In 2016, a former Fortina chef went out on his own to open a sandwich shop in Eastchester. While that doesn’t sound like big news, it actually is. These sandwiches, deliciously composed and made to order with high quality ingredients, are insanely good. We were fans of Mason Sandwich Co. from its earliest days and after revisiting more recently, I can definitively say that the word is out on how good these sammies are.

Get Yourself to Burrata Wood Fired Pizza

Get Yourself to Burrata Wood Fired Pizza

Burrata Wood Fired Pizza has been open since 2012 in Eastchester, NY. We don’t live all that close by, so it took us way too long to get here. But on the advice of a good friend, we finally tried it last month and, well, it was so crazy delicious that we came back again last weekend, but this time with 10 additional family members. Even with such a large, unruly (our party included 4 young kids) group, Burrata Wood Fired Pizza came strong.

The execution of the dishes is what makes Burrata Wood Fired Pizza a great restaurant, but before I even get to what you’re putting in your mouth, I must first give the restaurant credit for its menu. It is simple but elegant. There are Italian basics done extremely well on that menu, along side more interesting, less “safe” offerings done just as well. You can visit this restaurant with picky eaters and adventurous eaters, and everyone will find something to make her happy.

Feed Your Kids OR Get a Sitter at O Mandarin

Feed Your Kids OR Get a Sitter at O Mandarin

I follow a TON of food and restaurant related accounts on my personal Instagram. Over the past year or so, I’d noticed several of those accounts, including NYC based food folks, pimping out a fairly new Chinese food restaurant in Hartsdale, NY. As this is sadly not a usual occurrence, I took notice and put O Mandarin high on my to do list. With a good amount of delay, we finally made it there last summer. And now we keep going back. Find out below why this spot is a great addition to the suburbs.
